How Much Do You Need? Packing Material Guide by Property Size

If you're wondering how many boxes and materials you’ll need for your move, here’s a handy guide based on the size of your property:

  • Studio Apartment: You’ll typically need around 5 small boxes, 5 medium boxes, and 5 large boxes. Around 10 meters of bubble wrap and 1 ream of packing paper should be sufficient. Plan for 6 rolls of tape, 1 tape dispenser gun, and a roll of stretch film.

  • 1-Bedroom Apartment: For a slightly larger space, we recommend 10 small boxes, 5 medium boxes, and 5 large boxes. Use about 20 meters of bubble wrap and 1 ream of packing paper. You’ll need 6 rolls of tape, a tape gun, and a roll of stretch film.

  • 2-Bedroom House: Expect to use 10 small boxes, 10 medium boxes, and 5 large boxes. Around 30 meters of bubble wrap and 2 reams of packing paper are advised, along with 6 rolls of tape. Add 3 wardrobe boxes and furniture covers for extra protection.

  • 3-Bedroom House: You’ll likely require 15 small boxes, 10 medium boxes, and 10 large boxes. Use 40 meters of bubble wrap, 2 reams of packing paper, and 12 rolls of tape. Be sure to have sofa and mattress covers on hand as well.

  • 4-Bedroom House: Prepare for 15 small boxes, 15 medium boxes, and 10 large boxes. You’ll want about 50 meters of bubble wrap, 3 reams of packing paper, and 12 rolls of tape. Include 6 wardrobe boxes and the necessary furniture and mattress covers.

  • 5-Bedroom House: For larger moves, plan on 20 small boxes, 15 medium boxes, and 15 large boxes. Approximately 60 meters of bubble wrap, 3 reams of packing paper, and 18 rolls of tape should be sufficient. You’ll also need multiple covers for sofas, mattresses, and a complete packing kit to ensure everything is secure.

⏱️ How Long Does a Move Take?

Moving times can vary depending on factors like accessibility, amount of belongings, packing status, stairs or lift availability, and distance to the new property. However, here are average estimates based on years of experience moving households of various sizes:

🛏️ Room Move

Estimated Time: 1–2 hours
Team Size: 1 movers
Notes: Time can increase if there are stairs without lift access or if furniture needs dismantling.

🏠 Studio Apartment

Estimated Time: 2–4 hours
Team Size: 1–2 movers
Notes: If already packed and on a ground floor, this is a quick and straightforward job.

🛏️ 1-Bedroom Apartment

Estimated Time: 3–5 hours
Team Size: 2 movers
Van Size: Medium or Large
Notes: Time can increase if there are stairs without lift access or if furniture needs dismantling.

🏡 2-Bedroom House or Flat

Estimated Time: 4–6 hours
Team Size: 2–3 movers
Van Size: Luton
Notes: Involves more furniture and possibly stairs or outdoor access considerations. Packing ahead of time saves hours.

🏡 3-Bedroom House

Estimated Time: 6–8 hours
Team Size: 3 movers
Van Size: Luton (possibly 2 trips)
Notes: Complex moves with furniture disassembly, large appliances, and multiple floors can extend the time.

🏠 4-Bedroom House

Estimated Time: 8–10 hours
Team Size: 3 movers
Van Size: Luton (possibly 2 vans or multiple trips)
Notes: Advanced booking recommended. Consider a full packing service the day before the move for smoother logistics.

🏘️ 5-Bedroom House

Estimated Time: Full day (10–12+ hours)
Team Size: 3–4 movers
Van Size: Luton or multiple vans
Notes: A move of this scale may require a 2-day process—one for packing, one for the move. Preparation is key to avoid delays.

What Can Affect Move Duration?

  • Packing: Fully packed homes move significantly faster.

  • Stairs/Elevators: Lack of lift access or long carry distances increase loading/unloading time.

  • Disassembly/Reassembly: Larger furniture that requires dismantling adds time.

  • Traffic & Distance: Inner-city moves during rush hours can cause delays.

  • Last-Minute Changes: Not having everything ready can quickly extend your moving time.
