The Ultimate Moving House Checklist (2026)
Updated January 2026 · Foundations Removals
A good moving house checklist is the difference between a calm move and a chaotic one. This week-by-week checklist covers everything you need to do before, during and after moving day — from booking removals and packing to redirecting your post.
8 weeks before: plan and book
Confirm your moving date and book your removals company early — good crews get snapped up fast in summer. Get a fixed quote, declutter room by room, and start a folder for paperwork. If your dates might not line up, ask about storage now.
4 weeks before: notify and sort
Start your change of address list: council tax, GP, dentist, banks, employer, insurance, DVLA, TV licence and subscriptions. Book time off work for moving day, and arrange a parking suspension if you are in a controlled zone.
2 weeks before: pack and prepare
Begin packing non-essentials and label every box by room. Run down your freezer, and book any disconnection of appliances. Confirm the final details and arrival time with your movers.
Moving day: the essentials
Keep an essentials box with you — kettle, mugs, chargers, medication, documents and a change of clothes. Take meter readings at both properties, do a final walk-through, and hand over keys.
After the move: settle in
Set up your change of address redirect, register with local services, test smoke alarms, and unpack the essentials first. Then put the kettle on — you have earned it.
