How to Pack for a House Move: A Room-by-Room Guide

Knowing how to pack for a house move saves time, money and breakages. Follow this room-by-room approach and label as you go for a smooth, organised move.

Get the right materials

Use strong double-walled boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap and good tape, plus wardrobe and picture boxes for awkward items. Our boxes calculator estimates how many you will need.

Pack room by room

Pack one room at a time, starting with the rooms you use least. Keep boxes to a liftable weight — books in small boxes, bedding in big ones — and fill gaps so nothing shifts in transit.

Protect fragile items

Wrap glassware and china individually, stand plates on their edges, and cushion everything with paper. Mark fragile boxes clearly and load them last.

Label everything

Write the room and contents on the top and side of every box. A clear labelling system means your movers put each box in the right room — and unpacking is far faster.
